U.S. Draped Bust Dollars 1795-1797

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1477
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar, Bolender-14, BB-51, Rarity-1. PCGS graded VF-35. Vintage gray surfaces with only slight hairlines. The high points of the devices are lighter in coloration from years of circulation. Hair detail is a notch finer than the commonly encountered Very Fine example. A tiny amount of planchet granularity is noted above LIBE. Aside from the aforementioned hairlines the obverse surfaces are quite clean. On the reverse, the wear and color of the surfaces match the obverse. Adjustment marks are noted around the periphery, heaviest around AMERICA and at 6:00. The feather detail of the wings is more EF in definition while the breast feathers are heavily worn. Several old, dull scratches are noted near the juncture of the eagle's left wing and the chest. The rims on this example are strong and display no bruising (PCGS # 96858) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,500.

Lot 1486
1795 Draped Bust Dollar. Centered bust. . Bolender-15, BB-52. ICG graded AU-50. An impressive and charming example defined by sharp detail throughout and a golden patina. A very thin and shallow scuff runs down the portrait of Liberty, along the curls. The obverse displays not a single adjustment mark while the reverse has several around the legend. Rims are strong and possess no bruising. Only two die marriages exist for the 1795 Draped Bust, Small Eagle issue and both appear with about the same frequency in the market.
Estimated Value $9,500 - 10,500.

Lot 1487
1795 Draped Bust Dollar. Centered bust. . BB-52. Sharpness of EF-45. Cleaned and artificially retoned. An old cleaning has left visible hairlines and a lightly polished look to the surfaces. Retoning has put a charcoal and subtly iridescent color to the surfaces which makes the evidence of cleaning much less apparent. Well struck with sharp detail. A couple of old scratches on Liberty's portrait and several tiny rim nicks are the only marks to mention. No adjustment marks on either obverse or reverse. A very nice example that will bring a healthy premium over the normally encountered cleaned specimen.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,750.

1795 Draped Bust Dollar. Centered bust. . Bolender-15, Rarity-5. PCI graded EF-45 Our grade is VF, repaired. A heavily cleaned example that has been retoned. It is possible that repair work was done at 6:00 on the reverse but it is very faint and if it does exist, definitely expert in nature. Sharp detail on a popular variety with moderate impairments.

1796 Draped Bust Dollar. Small date, small letters. . Bolender-1, Rarity-4. Sharpness of EF-45. Cleaned and retoned. Sharp detail and satisfactory surfaces. Lot 1492
1796 Draped Bust Dollar. Small date, large letters. PCGS graded VF-35. Even and subtle iridescence has settled over antique gray surfaces. Well centered and sharply impressed by the dies. The surfaces have lost their original luster but the abrasions are minor and even in their distribution. Techincal detail on the obverse is more Extremely Fine in nature while the reverse detail is choice Very Fine, with the feather and breast detail just a tad too worn for XF. It appears that the remnants of several old trivial adjustment marks exist across the middle of Liberty's throat but they are very faint. The 1796 Draped Bust, Small Eagle die marriage is a seriously tough "type" to locate within early dollars. In choice condition for any respective grade, this issue can be very challenging. The present opportunity is an excellent one for those trying to locate an appealing lower grade example of this issue! (PCGS # 6860) .

Lot 1511
1797 Draped Bust Dollar. 10 stars left, 6 right. PCGS graded VF-25. Soft, weathered gray surfaces that have been spared any distracting scratches or marks. In contrast to the surfaces, both devices are a lighter silver color due to even wear from circulation. On the reverse there is an old, dull scratch from the border left of ST of STATES and continuing to the left side of the eagle's neck. Light iridescent tones have settled onto both the obverse and reverse fields. For a Very Fine specimen, the wear is even and the condition of the surfaces is above average. A plentiful amount of feather detail still exists. Of the three major varieties known to exist for the 1797 silver dollar, the 10X6 stars is the second scarcest and trails the 1797 9X7 Stars Small Letters in overall and condition rarity.

Please note that the present coin is incorrectly housed in a 9X7 Large Letters PCGS holder. (PCGS # 6863) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
